Torrefied Wood vs. Wood Pellets vs. Coal

Torrefaction removes moisture and low energy volatiles from the roasted wood, producing a product that is more energy dense (more energy per unit of weight) than wood, almost as dense as coal, and easier to grind.  It also has a number of other desirable characteristics.  The significance of the increased energy density and the other advantages is shown in the following charts, which compare torrefied wood and wood pellets to coal.
